It took just over two years for the the new British Railways to come up with a depot coding system applicable to the entire network. What was developed was an extension of the former LMS system of a number (denoting the main area) followed by a letter (denoting individual depots within that area). Codes were generally cast on plates and attached to locomotives; for steam usually (but not always) fitted to the smokebox door whilst diesels had them fixed anywhere convenient. A modern interpretation on a class 66 is shown below.

At the system launch, former LMS depots retained their previous codes and those from other companies adjusted to the system. Thus, whilst the new system started on 1 February 1950, former LMS depots already had an established code and are shown simply as 'from 1950', the year of the British Railways system rather than when actually given the code. Very few depots retained their original code throughout their British Railways life. This system was replaced by TOPS from 6 May 1973.

This listing attempts to give all depot codes used with appropriate dates. In some cases it is possible that a depot closed and reopened; this listing gives dates for the codes' use rather than depot operating dates (though of course in many cases these coincide, a code ceasing to be used once a depot closes).
